山是地面上被平地所围绕的具有较大绝对高度和相对高度而凸起的地貌区。 山离地面高度通常在100米以上，包括低山、中山与高山，是否被称作山取决于当地人。
山一般是因板块碰撞或是火山作用而产生。 山会因河流、气候作用或是冰河而慢慢侵蚀。 有些山会形成单独的顶峰，不过大部分的山会连在一起形成山脉。

由于对流和辐射的综合作用，山区的气候在高海拔地区变得更冷。 每升高100米气温下降约0.6度，在山区海拔升高100米大致相当于纬度升高0.75度。 然而这种关系仅仅是近似的，因为诸如靠近海洋（如北冰洋）等局部因素可能会彻底改变气候。
随着海拔高度的升高，降水形式主要变为雪。 风也会增强。
山脚和山顶的高度落差很大的山往往会有多样的生态环境。 从山脚下到山顶会因为海拔高度的不同而有不同的生态景观或生物圈。
其形成主要是因为在一特定高度范围内的动植物群无法生活在该区域之上或之下（原因为气候之不适应），导致该生物群仅出现在一座山的特定高度。 总的来说，这就是微气候所造成的结果。
